Thomas More

Thomas More Kempen is a University College in Belgium with eight departments and more than 7,200 students. It is one of the two entities of Thomas More, the bigger university college comprising more than 15,000 students and some 1,700 members of staff. Thomas More Kempen has always been an impulse for regional development in the Kempen, a dynamic region in Flanders, the Dutchspeaking part of Belgium. The research group ‘Inclusion’ supports practice by giving public access to the knowledge that was acquired through research using the competences of Thomas More Kempen through training and services. The main starting-point of the research group ‘Inclusion’ is to empower people with intellectual disabilities. This group complements existing organisations and supports organisations as well as policy makers at various levels.

The research group ‘Inclusion’ realises its vision through a number of strategic goals:
- interdisciplinary research programme;
- initiative in providing services to the community;
- training for teachers and external partners;
- high quality output;
- bring the Thomas More Kempen education programs in tune with the society requirements by integrating research results into educational programs

The research group on ‘Inclusion’ has strong relations with the department of Social Work and Occupational Therapy and is also well connected with the social sector in Belgium and participated in many national and international projects on the topic of inclusion of refugees.

The research group Social Inclusion of Thomas More Kempen is lead partner of the Maxipac.be project financed by the European Social Fund (ESF). In this project, the universities Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and Universiteit Gent (UGent) work together with Thomas More Kempen on a uniform assessment procedure for third country nationals who want to continue their studies in higher education. This advice was followed by the Belgian government and this system still exists today with satisfaction.
