Harokopio University (HUA)
Harokopio University (HUA) is one of the youngest universities in Greece. HUA is a non-profit, public higher education institution located near the city centre. HUA has more than 80 faculty members and a similar number of researchers. HUA educates young people and conducts basic and applied research in the fields of nutrition and agriculture, economics, sustainable development, human and physical geography and informatics, producing highly qualified graduates and innovative scientific knowledge. According to the Annual World University Rankings 2022, HUA ranked first and was awarded the title of the best university in Greece.
Today Harokopio University comprises three Schools and four Undergraduate Departments

The recent record of HUA’s experience in managing and implementing complex research projects includes among others the following projects: CYCLADES (2013-2018) financed from European Commission LIFE+ IMAJINE (2017-2022), COHSMO (2017-2021), financed by HORIZON2020, EO-PERSIST financed by Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) as well as projects funded by the Qatar National Research Fund (e.g. i-Doha), EEA grants (e.g. DemocracIT) as well as private projects for various institutions (e.g. Ministry of Immigration Policy, National Bank of Greece, etc.).
The Department of Geography (DGEO), one of the two Geography Departments in Greece, aims to develop basic and applied research in interdisciplinary scientific fields in social sciences and natural sciences. The Department addresses all three fundamental facets of geography: the human, the physical and the technical, focusing specifically on the following subfields:(a) rural, urban, political and social geography, with special emphasis on migration, rural development and mobility; (b) environment, geomorphology and climate change (c) Landscape analysis and protection, local and regional development and planning; and (d) Geoinformatics, spatial analysis and related areas such as digital cartography, geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing image analysis.
The Laboratory of Human Geography & Applied Geography in the Department of Geography, aims to train and educate students in the application of quantitative and qualitative methods of geographical and socio-economic analysis. In the premises of the laboratory, staff, postgraduate students and research associates design and implement funded research projects.
The very positive external evaluation report by the Hellenic Quality Assurance and Accreditation Agency (now Hellenic Authority for Higher Education) certifies the high academic standard of the curriculum, highlights the outstanding quality of the staff and recognises the driving forces of the research work carried out by the department.
